Aug 27, 2019, 9:22 pmJUNIOR SQUASH DEVELOPMENT AT SPRING BOYS HIGH
On the 3 August 2019 Spring Boys high celebrated their 85th birthday with a fun sports open day.
Easterns Junior Squash made use of this opportunity to introduce squash to primary school pupils. 32 very excited primary school pupils from the spring community got the opportunity to see what squash is all about.
We started the morning off with an exhibition match between two of our top eastern junior squash players, Pierce and Ethan Robinson.
The excitement could soon be felt and it did not take the youngster long to place bets on who they thought could win the match.
The rules of the game and the reffing calls were explained to the pupils as the exhibition match progressed. It was clear that the pupils got restless after the first two games of the match as they were itching to get on court and hit the ball!
As one of the boys remarked “I can do this it looks so easy” The pupils took the courts by storm and enjoyed every minute of being on court.
Pierce Robinson, Chanè Lotter, Berlin Sapire and Ethan Robinson taught the youngster the basic shot of the game and it was soon remarked “OK so it is not as easy as it looks, but it is great fun” St. Dominic’s school for girls was there to play matches against the Spring Boys High team and the girls joined in the fun with the primary school kids.
The high light of the day was when we gave the primary school players the opportunity to “challenge” the Eastern Junior Squash players.
Chanè really had her work cut out for her as all the players wanted to challenge her! The morning was ended off with some refreshments and question and answer session.
Two lucky players received Easter Junior Squash T-shirts for enthusiasm (wanting to challenge Chanè 7 timesâș) and the most pupil that bounced the ball on his racquet the most!
Thank you to Pierce, Chanè, Berlin and Ethan for offering to help and giving up their time. We are looking forward to giving more junior players exposure to squash in the Easterns Gauteng region.
Thank you to Springs Boys High for allowing us to make use of your squash courts, we are hoping to see these youngsters as part of your school league team in 2020.
